Directv - Privacy violated, disrespected, manipulated

I am writing this letter out of sheer frustration from my experience of dealing with Direct TV and their representatives. From the first call I placed to Direct TV, I explained that I live in a rural area and needed a satellite installed for the use of internet only. The first representative I spoke with informed me that in order to get internet I needed to order cable as well through a package deal. I proceeded to set up my package deal. During my time dealing with Direct TV’s internet department I was asked for my social security number by multiple representatives, only to find out that the internet department has nothing to do with sales and the internet is actually set up by an entirely different company which Direct TV outsources too. When the technician from Direct TV finally showed up to install our satellite, he knew nothing about internet service for us even though I had been on the phone with Direct TV’s internet department for over an hour and a half. Once I realized that none of the representatives at Direct TV could really help me I placed a call into Wind stream (The Company that Direct TV outsourced my internet service too). Wind stream knew little to nothing about my order and required me to fax them a notarized copy of my Social security card and driver’s license, which I did. Finally after that I got an installation appointment for my internet. Yet the next day Wind stream called and told me they were not going to be able to provide me with the service I requested. The Direct TV representative in the internet department informed me that I would be provided with internet at $35 a month with a connection speed of 6MB. They also told me that this was my best available option, which was provided through Wind stream. Yet Wind stream informed me they could only provide me with a 1MB connection speed at $50 a month, which is not a realistic connection speed for what I need. So after weeks of dealing with trying to get internet, through hours upon hours of calls placed to Direct TV, and after using multiple resources including money, time, etc. I am now back to where I started without internet only now to be tied down to a 24 month contract from Direct TV which I did not want in the first place. Through this whole process I feel like I have been lied to, manipulated, mistreated and disrespected and had my privacy invaded all by Direct TV and its representatives. I am writing this letter to Direct TV in order to give them a chance to make this right by cancelling my contract and uninstalling the satellite at no further charge. (I sent this this letter in to Direct TV, and was contacted the next day by one of their representatives only to be informed they were still going to charge me the full cancellation fee, they even had the nerve to try and get me to sign up for another package deal in the process).

I am astounded that you would actually provide a company with your social security number and driver's license number, etc. They do not need that to provide you with a service they are selling.

If they insist, walk away and walk away very fast. Do you really trust the people at these companies to keep your private information private?? With the plethora of scams and identity theft nowadays, to provide this kind of information is extremely dangerous. Find another company to provide you with internet.

Any company that insists on selling you television service in order to get internet is not a company you want to do business with anyway. By the way, do a search of this and other sites for Direct TV---complaints galore about their shady business practices.

And, make sure you do not pay their cancellation fee. I hope you did not sign up for auto billing or give them a debit card.

Um, whenever a compsny extends you CREDIT they are entitled to run your credit report to see if you're someone who pays their bills. A Social Security number is necessary to run the credit report and this is reasonable and customary.

You certainly don't have to provide it but they do not have to extend you credit, either.

Does anyone in this country know how the world works any more or has somebody put stupidity pills in the water system? Sheesh!

Directv - I closed my account with Direct TV on October 4, trying to collect for charges made in November.

Closed my account with Direct TV, customer service said my service would stop at midnight that night. When online a couple days later and paid off my balance. Mailed back the SIM cards from the receivers in the pre-paid mailer. now they are trying to charge me for special events that were charged in November. After the account was closed they are now threatening me with collections on events that happened after the account was closed. Customer service has been horrible and impossible to get through automated phone system. Direct TV has been unresponsive to compalints or phone calls.

As far as the charges it is their word against yours.I'm assuming your contract with them is up? If not watch your account they have on file for there will most likely be charges made.

how about you try paying your bill on time instead of constantly trying to get extension after extension? you admit you were trying to get a 2nd extension since you weren't going to pay.

if they gave you ANY extension at all it's because they're trying to work with you but they ARE in the business to make money not let people skid by over and over saying "oh can I have another extension? I can't afford my bill"

i'm sorry but if you cant afford to pay the bill don't try to get the service.

cable/satellite none of that is NEEDED to live. I went without cable tv for years and I was just fine.

DirecTv are crooks

Never put your credit card on DirecTv’s web side!!! They take it upon themselves to charge it anytime they feel like it. I canceled my account with them, and was told not to make a payment until I received my final bill. Which after 20 days I still have not received. So they just charged the credit card I used ONE time on their site, without authorization. I feel they overcharged me but I cannot get anywhere with their C.S., they are rude and unhelpful. I was told that DirecTv “holds the right to make any charges they deem appropriate”. I contacted my bank Chase and they would not help either, they told me that since I put my card on their site I granted them the right to use it at any time!!! How is this legal?? Make unauthorized charges to your card, anytime they want. For charges they make up?? And why do they feel they have the right to use it for three months after my cancel date??? Seriously??? I call that being crooks and stealing people’s money.

The charge was NOT unauthorized if you gave them the credit card number when you opened your account with them. The agreement (and yes, there IS an agreement; when will people learn to read things before they sign them) it clearly states that you're granting them authorization to charge your card for any sums you may owe them.

After having this horrid company I have learned the hard way. you can dispute the charges through your credit card and your money must be returned to your account pending the cc's decision.

If they find in DTV's favor the charge will be reapplied to your card and if not you will not have to pay it. After the money was returned to my cc I closed the cc account but was also told that if found in their favor the charge would reapply but they found in my favor.

It would also help to file a complaint with the BBB against DTV and your cc ..this can be done online. Good Luck

Everyone know's that when you close an account.Their is probably going to be an certain amount of money owed on this account.They will bill you for this amount of money.If you did not get an bill from Directv right.Why did you not take it upon yourself to telephone them to find out if you had an balance left on this account and Just pay that amount owed?Then you would not have had this problem in the first place of Directv taking money out of your account.People,Please learn you cannot get something for nothing.Use your head for something other than a "HAT RACK".Work with Directv and Directv will work with you.I am a Directv customer have been for about 15 year's.I have never had a problem with Directv because i know how to communicate with people.

@LINDA

Linda,I hope you never have a problem with DTV but I did.They did not give me time to pay them before charging my account not only for the early cancellation fee but also non-returned equipment fees within the week which amounted to over $1000. Places that are ethical will give the customer a chance to pay but not DTV!

These complaints are valid on here and these people have been taken advantage of by the worst company in the world. I try to help the customers of DTV because I know what I had to go through with this horrible excuse of a company and the nightmare of trying to get my money back.

Don't ever think you are special to DTV If given a chance they will do the same to you. They intentionally do not send a final bill because they have every intention of charging someone's credit card or bank account and they do. It would not have made a difference is she had called,they would have placed the charge on her card anyway.

Evidently you did not read your "Agreement" With Directv.This is the point of asking for a credit card,So if you do not pay them they can deduct the money from your credit card.DUD!Do you know how to read before signing anything.I have Directv but they do not have a credit card on file for me.This way their is know way to deduct anything from any bank account or Debit Card.This way i will have to pay Directv myself if i choose to pay.The credit card that Directv has,Has been closed for years and They have never asked for a new credit card number to be placed on file.It's not what you do,It's how you do it.If you close your account with anyone and Have a balance left to pay,Of course they will use whatever credit card they have on file to pay that account off.If you do not leave a balance they will not charge you a balance.Just pay the people and Move on.This is so simple.

@Linda

Linda, What agreement are you referring to? The back of a work order?

They may have a closed cc for you on file but if you pay them by check or online through your bank they also have your bank account# which they will debit in a heart beat.The only sage way to pay DTV is by money order. DTV will not only charge your bank account for whatever they see fit they will also not give you time to return their equipment or say they did not get it and charge for this as well and it will be up to you to try and get your money refunded from DTV and they do not like to give up any money once they get their grubby hands on it.

@Linda

Linda, It does not matter if the card DTV has on file is closed they can still place a charge on it.(call your cc and ask) and if you ever paid them by check,they have your checking account # on file as well.

Good point about not giving providers of services your credit card, or worse your debit card. At least with a credit card you can dispute the charge. With a debit card, the money is long gone.

Anonymous

@nikalseyn

That is true you can dispute the amount on a cc and the money will be returned pending their investigation but if found in DTV's favor you still have to pay because the charge will be reapplied. There are so many of the banks and cc companies that get kick-backs from DTV that most charges are reapplied.

We have been with DirecTV since 1995 but when we went to disconnect our service, we were told we owe $240.00 disconnect fee. They say when we updated to Genie, we signed up for 2 more years.

They did not tell us we were signing up for 2 more years. How can they get away with this?

Why even try this is another case of I'm right and nothing you can say, show, prove to me will make me think I am wrong, You didnt live up to your contract, they DO have the right to take their money, the contact was showed to you, maybe you should get someone who knows how to read to go over it word by word with you because Section 5e does say they can and WILL take money owed to them off the card on file, I deal with it at least 25 times a week and most of them can not get the idea of giving your card number in the past for a security deposit for possible charges in the future, you gave the card, you where TOLD and you can read the agreement at any time at directv .com/agreement so thank I would like to thank you for having enough money in your account to make sure we got all the money owed

Directv in Shelbyville, Indiana - Not told about needing internet for on demand

1-8-14 called to setup service, representative told me I was getting on demand as part of my package and I could watch movies and shat not when ever. I said great, I called back that night wanting to cancel service and the lady said she could up my install date from 19th to the next day1-9-14(today). The installer came out only showed us the DVR part and said everything was working great. Awesome, well we went to use on demand and it said you have to be connected to internet for it to work...WHAT!!!!! I called insaying iI was never told about needing internet for the on demand and they can check recorded tapes of conversations we had. The Lady said sorry we didn't tell you, we should have told you and apologized again. Well I am upset that I now have to go spend money on internet to make on demand work when direct TV never told me I needed it. I would have completely canceled if I was told that. I asked for something to make up for it since its their fault I wasn't told.the movie channels longer then the free 3 months and was never answered just continued to get told I have to have internet to make it work. I GET THAT NOW, but I was not told that and feel like I got shorted. Do not use direct TV, go to Comcast, I never had issues with Comcast. SAY NO TO DIRECT TV.......use at&t or comcast

Right on the front page of ALL the ads and deals it says clearly "On Demand requires high speed Internet connection of xxx mps or above ... Do you not read?

How did you think they were going to transmit Internet content to you? Sounds like most people posting here need to go back to school and learn to READ!

Their omission of required information regarding their services is the same as lying. They also don't tell the customer any upgrade or replacement of any equipment for any reason automatically renews their contract for another 2 yrs.If you are thinking of cancelling their service and they have a credit card or your bank account on file,it would be wise to change these #'s or close the account before cancelling their service for they will not give you time to pay them before debiting your account.

Once they have your money it is near impossible to get it back.If you decide to stay for the 2 yrs do not pay by check,this gives them your checking acc#,get a prepaid cc and post for their files,pay them in money orders and keep all receipts.You are theirs for 2 yrs unless you want to pay the hefty cancellation fee.When returning equipment be sure to get a tracking# and keep it handy. Treat DTV as your public enemy#1 because that is exactly what they are.

Your problem may also be with DTV as well as AT&T. Since you ordered service with DTV and cancelled this does not mean DTV will not place a charge on the account you gave them for instillation or other charges.Watch the account you gave DTV.As for the AT&T When I had Their service I was told by AT&T I did not have to return the modem but if you do it is very small and should not cost a lot to return it.
