Sit & Spin DTV

So here's an update: We received a call from "Dan" who claims to work in the Direct TV's president's office. We pretty much wasted another hour of lives on the phone with him. Dan ofcourse takes "Drew's" position that we should refer to our contract which gives them a right to charge an early cancelation fee - even though the Customer Contract does not define any amount of time for a trial period. So we put Dan to the test, and placed a three-way call into the customer service department and had Dan sit scilent on the line. Once again, we were told that Direct TV hold a 30 trial period and could cancel any time prior to that for any reason and would not be charged. Dan's response was that the Customer Service Rep did not know what she was talking about and that he would not acknowledge the conversation, and hung up. We have had our credit card company dispute the charge, and had it reversed. 2 days later we received a collection notice demanding payment in full or they would report us. Once again, we mailed a written dispute to the address provided by DTV, with a copy of all the documentation we had to date. That was about two months ago, and we still haven't heard anything, but we a haven't been sent to collections either. So we'll see what happens. My husband and I each have credit scores above 780, as we always pay our bills in full and on time. If they do send us to collections I will pull all of my documentation together and present it before a judge. Meanwhile, I will take the advise and list complaints with the entities listed above. Thanks for all the great feedback. Somehow, knowing that we're not the only ones going through this reassures me that I'm not crazy & that the "Drew's" in the world can sit & spin w/ DTV.

Direct TV DeFrauded Me

Am existing subscriber to Direct TV and had a third reciever installed 3 months ago--the third party installer totally botched the job (I have pics)--I called immediately to cancel the additional service and returned the receiver via Fedx and have the arrival receipt. I declined payment on my Amex and Amex investigated and found in my favor. Direct TV put the charge on the next bill as a "misc charge" even though the equipment was returned. They will not credit me for their ineptitude even though I was told two different times by customer service (I have their employee ID'ds)--the $219.00 would be taken off my bill. They are now threatening to disconnect service even though I have been paying my original contractual amount each month and noting on my checks the $219.00 has been waived. This will doubtlessly affect my "812" FICO Score, which will only add fuel to my legal action. This Company is Out of Control and I will be taking legal action as they damaged my outside walls, have blatantly ignored my certified letters, and falsely stated the bill would be removed. I will also file complaints with the local better Business Bureau and the State of Florida Consumer Affairs Dept

My mother had a problem identical to yours.

DirectTV won't respond to a complaint unless it falls within their phone agents script, and forget reaching anyone of importance who can REALLY rectify the situation.

Direct TV & Verizon

I just received new service with Direct TV two weeks ago which was ordered through Verizon. Direct TV billed Verizon instantly and Verizon did not have billing set up for me yet so Verizon did not pay Direct TV therefore Direct TV disconnected me for Verizon not paying my bill that I never even knew about. Now they will not turn me back on till I pay them $93.61. Once again, I have only been a customer for two weeks. It is awful. Please do not be victim of this. You can not speak to a rep in America.

WOW....the same thing happened to me today! Signed up with Verizon for a bundle deal which includes home phone, internet and Direct tv service this was on May 29,2010.

Today 07/14/2010 I wake up and Direct tv has been shut off,I call them and they tell me Verizon never set me up on a bundle plan and I need to pay 161.00 to have tv back on, I explain I paid my bill 2 weeks ago to Verizon and they tell me I am not on Verizon bundle and pay them full amount and also to contact Verizon. I call Verizon and they tell me on their part it shows I am set up for bundle and I need to handle it the Direct tv!! This is not what I signed up for I paid my bill and now have no tv and Verizon will do nothing!!!

I will be reporting them the contract I signed was agreed upon for the bundle deal in the amount of 84.99 so they have now voided the contact! Worse company ever

No service after the sale

In Feb, 2008, I decided to get a AT&T bundle discount for DirectTV. I live in a duplex and the other tenants already had DirectTV, so the Tech just connected to their dish which was fine with me. In August, while walking around the back of the duplex I noticed the junction box covers (2) were on the ground exposing the cable connections. I tried to snap the covers back on and they would not close due cables between the two boxes were routed not behind the boxes but on the top side. As such, you cannot secure the covers because of two cables. I call DirectTV and describe the problem. The young lady ask me if I could just nail a box of the two junction boxes??? I said NO and told her their tech had wired it and I wanted it fixed. She stated the 30 day warranty was up. She should work for Ford.

Direct TV Discrimination in

The discrimination by Direct TV is against NON-Hispanics. Yesterday my sister was approached by a guy marketing Direct TV. When she expressed interest he asked her if anyone in her family is Hispanic, or has a Hispanic last name. She said her sister was married to a man with a Hispanic last name, and she retained his Hispanic last name after their divorce. The Direct TV guy told my sister that she should have our other sister apply for the Direct TV service under her Hispanic last name because is you are Hispanic, Direct TV has a "special offer" for Hispanics ONLY, and they can get the Direct TV service at a cut rate and they get 6 MONTHS service for FREE. When my sister told the guy that is discrimination and RACIST, and it is against the law to offer a "special deal" to anyone based on RACE, he told her not to get him into trouble because he is only supposed to be telling Spanish speaking customers and Hispanics about the special offer for Hispanics ONLY. This is DISGUSTING and ILLEGAL. Maybe the service guy at your house knows about the preferential special deals that Hispanics are getting from Direct TV and he is DISGUSTED by it? IT IS ILLEGAL. I intend to file consumer complaints about the special deals for Hispanics ONLY, and submit this information to the United States federal government, EEOC, as a violation of discrimination laws. I also intent to turn Direct TV in to the Dept of Consumer Affairs, and the State Attorney General Office. If I have to I will file a class action lawsuit against Direct TV, and all NON-Hispanics who were not offered 6 months of free service when they signed up with the service can then become party to the class action lawsuit. When Direct TV loses the class action lawsuit, on the grounds of DISCRIMINATION BASED ON RACE - they will have to pay millions of US dollars to all the US customers who are NOT Hispanic and who were NOT offered a "special deal" that included a cut rate and 6 months of free Direct TV service. Let that be a lesson to any company who thinks they can discriminate against customers based on their race.

Customer Service is beyond terrible

They must get ratings for positively the worst customer service I have experienced. Once you get through the 'enter your number' blah, blah automated attendants, you do get a real customer service agent. They ultimately cannot fix your problem, so they put you on hold, and you are disconnected. Trust this - I tried it 3 times this evening, got 3 different agents, got disconnected 3 times. All because they could not figure out why NHL Center Ice was not accepted on my receiver. Take your chances with ComCast - these guys just don't have a clue - I call once a month with billing errors or other *** human/technology tricks, and they are completely unable to assist. Really pissed, and switching.

Direct TV SCAM

I have been a Direct TV customer since 2006. IN April of 08 we decided 2 get new DVR boxes because A, we liked the feature and B one of our old boxes kept freezing. We decided to Cancel this month because we are having some financial problems. When we called DTV they told us that when we signed the Work Order for the boxes being installed that automatically signed us up for another 2 years. We were NEVER told of this. The agents at DTV were rude and not even willing to work with us. We have filed a complaint with the BBB and I feel everyone else who has had this problem should also. They can not continue to get away with this. Especially since they are now trying to charge us 380 to cancel.

LadyDi -

I would file a complaint with the BBB. We did, we just got a rebuttal from direct tv today actually.

They are claiming they informed us for hte 2 years extention when they called us, which they never did.

We sent our own rebuttal back challenging them to pull the phone call and prove it. We actually linked this website to the e-mail so they can see all the complaints.

I terminated my service, I paid in full, returned my boxes promptly,,,I never tied my phone lines into my TV, had a zero balance...got a zero balance bill..

now I get a bill 92 dollars for some *** someone supposedly looked at in Sept '07...they said they could bill me because it was found out when I returned my box and the tech looked at it..Have you ever heard of anything so crazy??? anybody have a simular stories email me...dyannpa@***.com

Thanks, for the info. I am in NJ and while I haven't heard about any court cases here, it won't hurt to look into it. I'll keep you all updated!

Tony S Mom

I heard recently about a court case in California that outlaws early cancellation fees for cell phone contracts. Since this seems like a similar scenario, it might be worth looking into whether this applies to satellite television contracts as well.

Pretty unethical that they "forgot" to inform you of the contract extension.

Kind of convenient on their part. Best wishes and my prayers are with you.

Direct TV, liars and theives!!!

My advise to anyone and everyone , do not go with direct tv. I was with dish network, had been for three years and was happy with service.

My main DVR was failing, so I called the number on the back of my remote for service. Apperently the person who answered the phone (his name was Mike), worked for a dealer that sells both Dish and Direct TV. He brow beat me into switching to Direct TV, stating I would be saving over 20.00 per month. So I made the switch.

After having it installed, ( and that is a totally seperate nightmare) I notice I did not have Encore and Starz as I did with my other service. I called direct tv and was advised that I had not signed up for that service and it would be an additional 15.00 per month, so much for my savings. I stated this was not what I was sold and I wanted to go back to Dish. At that time I was told I would be charged for disconnect services of 450.00.

So I sucked it up and went on for a couple of months , but my equipment kept failing. After being told it would cost me 85.00 to have someone come out and look at equipment that wasn't even six months old, I got fed up and went back to Time warner. I am saving alot of money because all of my services were switched, meaning phone, cable and dsl. I cancelled my contract with Direct tv and they took 380.00 out of my checking account.

O.k. I let that go as I understand I would be hit with a early termination fee. But the absolut kicker is that I then go hit for another 388.74 because they are stating I didn't return my equipment. I did return the equipment.

After five phone calls ( and we all know how painful that can be) The first person told me I would be refunded my money in 5 business days. I called back after the 5 business days , and was told there was still a credit on my account and that she would reissue and it would take 3 businss days for the money to be credited back..after the 3 days I called again and was told yes it take three days for their accounting department to get the credit and 6 to 8 weeks for them to actually put the money back in may account. Can you believe that! 6 to 8 weeks, in the meantime I have had two payments bounce, costing me another 50.00.

I would love to talk to anyone that has had this same experience and possibly speak with an attorney about a class action suite to make sure they can not do this to other unsuspecting consumers.

I bought a 2 year contract from direct tv and the service I received was not what I was told so I canceled in about 26 hours. When I canceled I was told that I would be charged $480 for early termination.

The contract I signed said I had 3 days to cancel so I filed a complaint in small claims court. Another thing I did right away was cancel the credit card I gave them and had a new one issued. They never did charge me $480. They either lied to begin with or changed their minds about charging it after the law suit.

They charged me a $3.55 per dium fee for 2 days. When I went to court the lawyers that direct tv claimed would be there were absent. However, things did not work in my favor. The *** judge granted me a $3.55 judgement but it did not include the $107 filing fee I paid to make my complaint.

Apparently it is legal for a business to make threats about charging an incorrect fee as long as they do not follow through with it.

Same issue here. They took two payment directly from my bank account witch caused me to overdraft..

no to mention it was more than the bill even was. So after admitting they owe me money its been over a month...

still no refund. I HATE DIRECT TV >:(

Direct TV just debited my bank account for $150.00. Never used or purchased any of their services! Never even called about them or met a sales rep.

I am very unhappy with Direct TV, They promised me one thing and I just found out it was all deception. I can't afford this kind of bad business, I just want out!

Some-one tell me how to get out of this nite mare. Thanks Eric

they tried to take 1,000.00 dollars out of my account on the same day my rent was due and i called them got the same thing u guys got one person to the next then they tell me to call my bank and tell them to cancel the transaction my banks says that they need directv to fax a paper saying that they could cancel it called directv to ask them to fax the paper they told me that they couldnt do it. i am so mad and now they say that i probably wont get my money back. We hav got to stop these people!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest

Indeed I'm having the same problem.

I'm in Aruba don't even live in the US and these people got my credit card I don't know from where cause I never aplied for any service with them.

They billed my card on December 20,2011 a charge of $125.00 and another charge of $58.47.

I have no service with them and never authorized these charges.

When I call them they tell me to send a fax to billing dispute and after days from sending the fax you call them again they send you from one person to another.

They are THIEVES and they just robbed my money.

I have to close my credit card account now to avoid future charges as I know I will not get my money back. :(

Guest

I know this post is several years old, but I am having issues with them as well. They are charging me over 1000 dollars on my card, when I have never had Direct TV, they explained to me that if I made a friend or family member's payment before, this is where they got my information.

They continued by saying that it is in the contract of the person with their service to allow them to charge the card they have on file. They explained to me that there are a couple of ways for me to get my money back, but in the meantime I have deadlines and bills due, not to mention overdraft charges from them doing this.

I am extremely angry, as I have worked hard for some opportunities that they have just ruined. :(

Guest

I thought I would add another thing or two about directtv. One, if you actually want HD all the time then direct is where you need to be.

It has the best choice of channels for its packages. Way better than the lame dish..I had dish for a short time and was not happy whatsoever with their programming vs cost! If you like more dishes on your house or in your yard I guess dish would be okay for you! As far as contracts go, if you actually read the ads on tv about getting direct you would find out there are contracts.

It may not be in giant print to make it easy to read but dish and other companies do the same thing. And I have no idea how people are having money taken from their credit cards, or bank accounts by this company. WE have used both to pay our bills and with a credit card we told them do not use it to pay bills, and they didn\'t. And they have never taken from the bank account.

So maybe some of you should possibly check other things before wanting to pull a lawsuit out. What I have read so far will not be something that a lawyer who is good and is working for you to win, not him or herself, will tell you honestly that you have a case in most of the stuff I have read. Just because you are not happy with certain things, or perhaps got more packages than you could afford, couldn\'t pay all of it on time so they cut you off, I don\'t know but usually most complaints have questionable background. I hate that the prices are going up but guess what!

Prices go up because the programs that directtv gets for their customers don\'t come free.

The others charge more on new contracts so that is passed on to the customers of direct because of it. Nothing is free!

Guest

I am not quite sure why there is so much anger toward the company. My wife and I have had Directtv for over ten years and have never had a problem with them.

Only once did some movies I got from pay per view get double charged for some reason. I don't have a landline phone, but for two months my mom in law was here and she had one and somehow they tried to charge for movies that we had watched some six months before and weren't even playing at the time they charged us. After talking to a supervisor because two workers apparently didn't understand english the double charge was taken off and they gave us three movies for free! They do have some people that I question their abilities but every other time we have not had problems and the service tht we have had when our dvr box went out was immediately taken care of the next day, after going out on a Sunday.

They have never taken out of our accounts. The only problem I have right now is the battle between them and our local fox affiliate.

Last week of NFL regular season and no Fox and American Idol coming up soon and no Fox. Both stations need to get this worked out now because they are screwing with alot of folks in our area because thanks to our ripoff cable company where we live more people get direct than cable.

Guest

DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY CHARGE CARD NUMBERS!!!! THEY RAN UP MY ACCOUNT, WERE SUPPOSE TO CREDIT IT ALL BACK...WHEN YOU CALL THEY PUT YOU THROUGH FROM ONE PERSON TO THE NEXT AND STILL NO CREDIT!!!! BEWARE OF THIS LOUSY COMPANY...

Direct TV doesn't advise consumers about contract

I have(had) been a Direct TV customer for 4 1/2 years. During that time I moved in 2/07 and now 10/08 moving. I no longer wanted Direct TV and was told I was in a 2 year contract. I told them I didn't sign up for 2 years. I was told because a new HD receiver was added when I moved it put me into a 2 year contract. I had purchased my own HD receiver prior to moving and the techie said mine was old and replaced. Rip Off for not advising new contract.

The exact same thing happened to us the receiver they had supplied was not working and when they replaced it they asked my husband to sign he refused, the tech said no problem he did not have to sign. now I have been with out tv for a week and the next appointment they have is in two weeks!

so I called to cancel and they said I had a contract that i never signed! what a scam!

Direct TV illegally used my debit card

Direct TV used my debit card to pay my son's bill, which I used a couple of times to pay his bill for himwhile he was on the road. This is totally illegal to do such a thing especially since I asked that the card not be kept on file. I was told that in order for it to be used automatically, a form would have to be filled out or I would have to tell them while it was being recorded. Making me even angrier, my son called and cursed the customer service rep out and they reinstated his service and he doesn't have another bill until December, while they interrupted my service because I am a little late due to the fact that my checking account is in the hole because of the $663.02 they hit my debit card for! To make a long story short, I had to cancel my debit card and dispute the charges which takes up to 2 weeks to get everything cleared up! I am seriously pissed!

Over billing

Direct TV cut off 2 of 4 receivers then tried to charge me $79.95 for having the tech. to turn them back on. They also failed to send a bill for Sept. then charged me $3.00 late fees plus $11.00 that neither them or I can explain. When I called, I got shuffled between billing and service, with someone who could barely speak English until they lost contact on the phone, then they called me back and did the same thing again. I finally got tired of the phone tag and quit talking to them until they get someone who speaks English since I am American and live in the good old USA.
